The annual consumption of flame retardants is currently over 1,5 million tonnes. These are mainly based on halogenated and brominated compounds to prevent or slow the start or growth of fire. Besides being necessary, their environmental impact is deeply concerning. They can make a fire more toxic and these chemicals are found at particularly high levels in marine mammals and are associated with adverse health effects in these and other species.
Tech4MED developed NaturALL-FR, a biodegradable, biocompatible, and ecofriendly alternative to conventional fire retardant products. It is a liquid formulation obtained from biomass generated from sea and forest. Having tests ongoing in multiple materials, the application on polyester is already demonstrated, retarding the melting of the polymer with the nature-derived NaturALL-FR.
